Sanganeb Atoll is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 25 km northeast of Port Sudan, approximately 2 hours by boat. This pristine coral reef system is crowned by a historic British lighthouse built in 1906, still operational today. The atoll is renowned for its dramatic vertical walls dropping over 800 meters into the deep blue, offering some of the Red Sea's most spectacular diving experiences. Crystal-clear waters with visibility exceeding 30 meters reveal an underwater paradise teeming with marine life. Divers frequently encounter hammerhead sharks, grey reef sharks, manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles gliding through vibrant coral gardens. What is the best season to visit Sanganeb? How warm is the water?+
Sanganeb is open year-round. The best conditions are usually October to May when visibility peaks. Water temperature ranges roughly between 26 and 30 °C depending on the season.
Do I need a diving certification to join the trip?+
No. The trip suits everyone: snorkeling for non-divers and families, and guided dives for certified divers. If you are not certified you can try a first dive with an instructor or enroll in an Open Water course.
What is the difference between snorkeling, a discovery dive, and certified diving at Sanganeb?+
Three separate programs on the same trip: (1) Snorkeling — open to everyone, no certification, in the shallow calm lagoon; ideal for families and kids. (2) Discover Diving — no certification needed; you dive one-on-one with an instructor at a safe shallow depth. (3) Certified diving — for licensed divers only and may include deeper sites with stronger currents; the 'experienced divers' note in the trip details applies only to this program, not to snorkeling or discovery dives.
How long is the trip and where do we depart from?+
It is a full-day trip: we depart in the morning from the marina in Port Sudan and return before sunset. The boat ride to the island takes roughly 90 minutes depending on sea conditions.
Is the trip suitable for kids and non-swimmers?+
Yes. The island itself is sandy and pleasant, and the lagoon is shallow and calm. We provide life jackets and a professional crew accompanies you all day.
